Spirulina is a blue-green algae, mostly found in the alkaline lakes of Mexico and Africa. It has a perfect spiral shape, from which its name took origin. It belongs to a cyanobacteria species and it is incredibly rich in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and trace elements, including vitamin A, B6, C, E, K, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and zinc. But more importantly it is especially rich in essential amino acids. In fact it includes around 18 of the 22 amino acids our bodies need and for that reason it is often called “green meat” or “the milk of Earth”. Spirulina is a rich source of phycocyanin, a powerful antioxidant which helps to protect the body against oxidative stress and premature ageing. Its high content of amino-acids makes it recommended for weight-control.
